                                           Workshop on Youth Entrepreneurship Development
Workshop on Youth Entrepreneurship Development organized by Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) together with Colombo Plan and Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Trincomalee District was held at 08th July 2016 at Hotel Green Garden, Trincomalee. Around 20 youth in Trincomalee, including those who have already started business and those who wish to start business participated for this workshop.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, His Excellency Kinley Dorji, the Secretary General, Colombo Plan called for more innovative and diversified fields for entrepreneurship development training programme for Sri Lankan youths. Highlighting on the various scope on tourism sector in Sri Lanka, he said youths can find many opportunities in the field of tourism. “You can train yourself as a good guide, good travel agent, good chef, manager, or even run a small restaurant or hotel”, he said in his opening remarks. Another field, he suggested was co-operative farming, as Trincomalee District has many agricultural land which is not utilized, and there is wide scope and demand for vegetables.
FCCISL President, Sarath Kahapalarachchi, who thanked the Secretary General for supporting this programme, promised to train more unemployed youths in entrepreneurship and link them with the Government schemes. Mr. Kulatheepan (Chairman – Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Trincomalee District) said his organization will try to train more youths in to tourism industry, but speculated on the lack of proper academic courses on hotel management, tourism industry, etc in the region.
A well known trainer Mr. Gamini Herath who is president of CEFENET Sri Lanka conducted the workshop. Mr. Lakshman (Director – FCCISL), Mr. K. Kulatheepan (Chairman – Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Trincomalee District) Mr. Chandana Ranasinghe (Deputy Director – Industrial Development Board), Mr. J. M. Ameer ( Regional Manager – Central Bank of Sri Lanka) and Dr. Thomas Scaria (Senior Programme Officer – Colombo Plan) attended for the opening ceremony.
The objectives of the workshop include (a) providing knowledge and skills that are required for the successful operation of business entities (b) Promote the entrepreneurship as a career option among youth and (c) To foster the culture of entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka etc.
The workshop covers areas such as Introduction to Entrepreneurship & personal entrepreneurial competencies of entrepreneurs, New business creation process and documentation procedure, Business Planning, organizing resources and implementation of the Business plan and Essentials of marketing for small businesses etc. FCCISL will be organizing several other workshops of this nature throughout the island.
