Dr. Thusitha Tennakoon assumes duties as Secretary General of FCCISL
Dr. Thusitha Tennakoon assumed duties as the Secretary General of FCCISL on January 1, 2010 after completing distinguished career stint of almost a decade (from July 2000 to Nov. 2009) as the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Studies/Research of the prestigious Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), Colombo, Sri Lanka. Dr. Tennakoon brings in a wealth of experience in bi-lateral and multi-lateral negotiations, international relations, conflict resolution & peace building, youth empowerment and academic training/research, to steer FCCISL to greater heights in the post conflict development arena.
In his previous official capacity he was the Secretary to the: Council of Management of the BCIS, Finance & Management Committee and the Board of Academic Affairs. He also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the BCIS Journal titled ‘International Relations in a Globalising World published by SAGE, New Delhi from 2003 to 2008. Dr. Tennakoon is the Founder Chairman of the Sri Lanka One-Text Initiative (2004 – 2007) & member of the Board of Directors (2008 – 2009), Founder member of the Board of Directors of the Info-Share (Guarantee) Ltd (2004-2005) and Founder member of the Board of Directors of the South Asia Peace Institute (2004 – 2006).
He has traveled widely and also served as a member of the Steering Committee of the Regional Network of Strategic Studies Centers (RNSSC) covering North Africa, Middle East and South Asia, sponsored by the Near-East South Asia Center ( NESA Center ) attached to the National Defense University, Washington D.C. and of the Counter Terrorism Working Group of the RNSSC. He is permanent Co-Chair of the dialogue on ‘China – SAARC Relations: Towards a partnership of Common Prosperity’ hosted by the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), Beijing.
Prior to joining the BCIS, he was attached to the Department of Physics of University of Peradeniya as a Senior Lecturer. Graduated in B.Sc. (Special) Science Degree in 1991, Dr. Tennakoon completed his Ph.D. in Physics, jointly offered by the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and University of Peradeniya, in 1998. Hailing from Hulangamuwa, Matale, he completed his secondary education at St. Thomas College, Matale. He is married to Dr. Yassassri Hewamallika with two children, Sithira & Thinula.
Meanwhile, Sam Stembo, who functioned as the Assistant Secretary General of FCCISL assumed duties as the National Project Director of the FCCISL CHEER Project, 2009/2013 (Chamber-network Engagement in Economic Rehabilitation). It is the FCCISL project component EU ACAP Project implemented by OXFAM and FCCISL is the OXFAM’s private sector national implementing partner of the project.
